GAMMA Program Hosts Central Texas Global Game Jam 2015

This past weekend, the University of Texas at Austin’s Game and Mobile Media Applications (GAMMA) Program hosted the Central Texas Global Game Jam (GGJ) 2015. The GGJ is the world’s largest game jam event—taking place at hundreds of physical locations all around the world at the same time. The Central Texas location took place on the UT Austin campus January 23-25.

The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds and experience to participate and produce an entirely new game in one 48-hour weekend event. Despite the condensed game development cycle, this year’s Central Texas GGJ had 115 participants create 24 unique games.

“We were most excited to see UT students and members of the surrounding community working together to create games this year,” said Dr. Paul Toprac, Associate Director and Senior Lecture of the GAMMA Program. “From people participating for the first time ever to game jam veterans, all the teams came together and created some truly creative and memorable games.”

On hand to judge this year’s games were a jury of local industry professionals from Bee Cave Games, Chaotic Moon Studios, Electronic Arts, Multimedia Games, Spacetime Studios, and
The categories were: Best in Show, Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visuals, and Best Use of Humor.

This year’s winners were:

“We more than doubled our attendance from last year,” said Toprac, “so we are already excited to see what happens during next year’s Global Game Jam!”

The next Global Game Jam will be held on January 29-31, 2016.


The Game and Mobile Media Applications (GAMMA) Program at the University of Texas at Austin is an interdisciplinary undergraduate certificate program between the College of Fine Arts, Computer Science Department, and Radio-Television-Film Department.
